Description:

Folios 182-184. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from John Thomas Graves, Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union Workhouse on 9 June 1863; includes details of medical provision, management of the school, the vagrant wards, numbers of inmates. Graves notes that the guardians decline to allow admittance to the Catholic priest unless requested by an inmate and notes correspondence with the Board, 2091/1863 on this subject. He encloses a copy of an entry in the visitors' book made by J B Browne, Inspector of Schools in which Browne hopes that children under the age of 4 years will not be sent to the school. He notes that examination results and behaviour were creditable to the schoolmistress. He also recommends purchase of 13 copies of English History published by SPCK.
