Description:

Folios 500-502. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from Andrew Doyle, Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of the Wolstanton and Burslem Poor Law Union Workhouse on 14 June 1861, includes details of medical provision, management of the school, the vagrant wards etc. Doyle reports 74 inmates of the workhouse not communicants in the Church of England, and appends a copy of a note from the School Inspector.

The School Inspector, H G Bowyer, reports that the boys have made some progress, but the schoolmistress is not competent to teach any but the two lowest classes and has failed to pass her examination. If the two schools were to be united as those in Newcastle and Stafford workhouses are, then she would be able to deal with the youngest children and the industrial training of girls. Older girls could be taught with the boys. He suggests that a wash house and laundry be created in the girls' yard to aid their industrial training. He adds that the guardians have not agreed to unite the schools.
