The AS series prefixes were first used and allocated to departments in the Asia and the Oceans Division in 1987/88 and allocated to the Department(s) dealing with aid to countries throughout the South/Central America, Caribbean and Pacific regions; also (later) UK Dependent Territories in the South Atlantic region, (Commonwealth and Non-Commonwealth) until the final period of Department for International Development (DFID) paper files, 2004/06. From 1997 onwards responsibility for the provision and administration of both bilateral and multilateral aid was devolved from DFID headquarters to various countries throughout South/Central America and Caribbean region.
