Administrative / biographical background:

The AF series prefixes were first used and allocated to departments in Africa Division in 1987/88, including departments dealing with aid to countries in the Mediterranean and Middle East region, and continued in use for departments in this Division until the final period of Department for International Development (DFID) paper files, 2004/06.

From 1997 onwards responsibility for the provision and administration of both bilateral and multilateral aid was devolved from DFID headquarters to offices in various countries throughout Africa and, to a smaller extent, the Middle East. This series will also contain files sent to the UK from external offices for second review.

The creating departments within the Africa Division for these files are defined as follows:

Overseas Development Administration (ODA):

  • 1987 to 1992 Eastern Africa Department, Central and Southern Africa Department, West and North Africa and the Mediterranean Department.
  • 1993 to 1996 Eastern Africa Department, Central and Southern Africa Department, West and North Africa Department.

Department for International Development (DFID):

  • 1997 Africa Greater Horn and Co-ordination Department, Central and Southern Africa Department, West and North Africa Department, various overseas offices in Africa and the Middle East.
