The files contain papers relating to the commercial management of ancient monuments and, in particular, publicity measures, publication of books and meetings of the Ancient Monuments Presentation Committee. Some of these files were re-registered from the EG series into the AMP series at the establishment of the Ancient Monuments (Presentation) Branch in 1969. After 1970 the AMP prefix continued to be used by the Department of the Environment and also by the Historic Buildings and Ancient Monuments Commission (English Heritage) when that agency was created in 1984 to take over much of the work relating to ancient monuments. |

The Ancient Monuments (Presentation) Branch was part of the Directorate of Ancient Monuments and Special Services in the Ministry of Public Building and Works and from 1973 of the Ancient Monuments and Historic Buildings Directorate in the Department of the Environment. It was responsible for the commercial management of ancient monuments and historic buildings. The branch was initially headed by a principal information officer who was formerly a member of the Chief Information Officer's Branch in Establishment Division 5. |
