Initial sentence: Death, commuted to 14 years transportation. Annotated (Outcome): Nil. Petitioner(s): 34 inhabitants of Hythe and neighbourhood, including the mayor, justices, the foreman of the jury, the prisoner's former employers and John Sedgwick, the prosecutor. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner is a young, hard working man; he pleaded guilty to this his first offence; he was induced to commit the crime by a notoriously bad character; his widowed mother and former employers testify to his good character. |
