Description:

Captured ship: Jeune Catherine of Workum (master Hendrick Stoffels or Stoffens).

History: a Dutch merchant ship (150 tons, 6 men), bound from Bordeaux to St Malo, laden with wine, oil, soap, rosin and other goods; taken on 10/21 May 1747 between Morlaix and Isle de Batz by HMS Surprise (James Webb commanding) and HMS Otter sloop (William Cust commanding), and brought into Guernsey.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: five examinations, special interrogatories (duplicate copies), six special examinations, cover letter;
  • [CP 6-CP 7]: claim and attestation;
  • [CP 8]: allegation;
  • [CP 9-CP 11]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 119 ship's papers.

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 1-SP 116 [mostly bills of lading; with gaps: SP 67-SP 95, SP 97, and SP 117-119 were restored].
