Description:

Captured ship: Achille of St Malo (commander Louis Jean François Du Serre).

History: a French privateer (140 tons, 137 men, 22 carriage guns) bound from St Malo on a cruise; taken on 10 June 1745 by HMS Princess Louisa (William Boys commanding) and HMS Captain (Thomas Griffin commanding) about 16 leagues south of Start [Point], and brought into Plymouth.

  • [CP 1-CP 7]: standing interrogatories, three examinations (of Du Serre, Simon Pinot and Gilles Glau) taken on 3 June 1745, return, attestation, translation and abstract of the 14 ship's papers including 2 letters;

  • [CP 9 - CP 13]: three examinations taken in Devon on 7-10 August 1745 (of Guillaume Desbois, Pinot and Glau), standing interrogatories and commisioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 14 - CP 16]: copies of the three examinations of 3 June extracted from the HCA registry.

Ship's papers: numbered SP 1-SP 14, including the muster roll, and orders and letters from Duchenot Chenu, the owner of the privateer, to Du Serre.
