Description: |
Folio(s) 55-56. Letter from Earl of Berkeley, Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, at Berkeley Castle, reporting on the Quarter Sessions held at Gloucester the previous day. He says that the grain supply is deficient and, though the poor depend on barley, the distillers are buying it all up. The distillers are also smuggling wheat from ships at Bristol. The potato crop on which the people depend over the winter is also poor. He asks for an Order to stop the distillers from buying grain for a time. He also reports that John Gibbs and Abraham Bolton have been sentenced to transportation for seven years. The Gloucester County Gaol is full, and he asks the Home Secretary to expedite their removal. |
