Folio(s) 32-35. Letter from William Mitford, at Pitshill [Sussex], enclosing an address from certain Surrey magistrates which he considers led to the appearance of the Godalming handbill and caused a riot at Midhurst. Mitford reports that the rioters who were arrested appeared at the Quarter Sessions where they pleaded guilty and were bound over to keep the peace for two years. Enclosed: Printed address from the magistrates acting for the Hundreds of Blackheath, Farnham, Godalming and Wokeing, in the county of Surrey. Also enclosed: Printed handbill dated 16 September. The inhabitants of Godalming, in an attempt to bring down the price of provisions, will oblige farmers to stop selling by sample and to bring their corn to town markets. |
