Description: |
Prisoner name(s): John Forrest. Prisoner age: 17. Prisoner occupation: Medical Student. Court and date of trial: Stirling Circuit Court of Judiciary, Spring 1823. Crime: Raising dead bodies in November 1822 and failing to appear for his trial. Initial sentence: Outlawry. Annotated (Outcome): Granted Free Pardon, 22nd June 1824. Petitioner(s): Robert Adie, Brother-in-law of the accused. Robert Drummond. James Dinsmore. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The accused young man is the son of the late Dr. Forrest, a physician in Stirling. The offence occurred while he was a medical student at the University of Edinburgh. He was accused of aiding in the abstraction of a dead body from the Churchyard of Stirling, an inexperienced youth being led astray by more mature people. Testimonies from distinguished medical teachers and responsible inhabitants of Stirling attest to the good character and diligence as a student of the accused young man who was absent from Scotland when the indictment was issued. |
