Prisoner name(s): James Hale. Prisoner age: 18 [on petition cover but 13 in the text]. Court and date of trial: Gloucestershire Summer Assizes, Gloucester, 1826. Crime: Stealing money, namely five shillings (and a cask and a small quantity of brandy) from the house of John Goode (victualler, of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire). Initial sentence: Seven years transportation. Gaoler's report: 'Connected with a gang'. Annotated (Outcome): 'On board Justitia' [Convict hulk at Woolwich, London]; 'Not selected for recommendation on account of former character'; 'Nil Sept 27 1830'. Petitioner(s): Susannah Hale (mother) of Worcester Street, Cheltenham undersigned by John Goode (prosecutor) and Robert Capper (committing magistrate) with 57 civic dignitaries or other inhabitants of Cheltenham; Susannah Hale undersigned by Robert Capper (both as above). Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Led astray by his elders; His youth; His deep contrition; His good conduct on the hulks; His mother now has an inheritance that will permit her to place her son in an apprenticeship.
