A Directorate of Air was established in June 1942 as part of the department of the deputy chief of the Imperial General Staff.

It was responsible for the policy, organisation, requirements and general questions concerning Army air support and light aircraft, air liaison sections, airborne and air transported forces including transport aircraft and gliders, parachute, glider pilot and air transport training, general staff, co-ordination with the Air Ministry and liaison with the Royal Air Force. It functioned until 1948.
