Description:

Folios 495-498b.

To: The General Board of Health.

From: Reverend Scott F Surtees, Rector of Richmond, [Yorkshire].

Letter reporting that a case of Asiatic Cholera has occurred in a filthy yard at Richmond. Surtees explains that two days prior to this he had warned the mortgagee and nominal owner of the yard that 'if any death occurs there I shall hold you guilty of manslaughter.' He says he made a formal complaint to the Mayor of Richmond in writing about the state of the yard and subsequently 'some trifling alterations' were made to the drainage. He asks for guidance from the Board as to how such cases can be remedied and what is required to effect a visit from one the Board's inspectors.
