Description:

Folios 377-379.

To: The Local Government Act Office.

From: N Jowett, Clerk to the Idle Local Board, Idle, [Yorkshire].

A letter and copies of clauses from the Bradford Waterworks and Improvement Bill. Jowett relates that the Bradford Corporation and their affiliated water company, the Calverley District Waterworks, already have the legal authority under a previous Act to supply Idle with water. However, the Idle Local Board are concerned that this new Act will allow the Bradford Corporation and the Waterworks to have a monopoly over Idle's water supply, leaving the District at the mercy of whatever price for water is set. Jowett says that if the Idle Board had been aware of the enclosed clauses in the Bill sooner they would have petitioned against it in the Commons. Jowett now asks the Office's opinion on the Idle Board's concerns and whether they think it worthwhile for the Idle Board to mount a petition of opposition to the Bill when it is read in the House of Lords.
