Folio(s) 478-480. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from Mr Andrew Doyle, Poor Law Inspector to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of Wolstanton and Burslem Poor Law Union Workhouse on 15 November 1856; includes details of medical provision, management of the school, the vagrant wards etc.He reports on overcrowding in some parts of the workhouse and encloses a statement of the dimensions of the various wards. He suggests that a letter is sent to the guardians advising them that the Board are considering restricting the number of inmates to each ward and asking for their comments which he will discuss at a future meeting with the guardians. He also comments on poor ventilation in the sick and receiving wards and on the lack of work provided for vagrants. He disapproves of the fact that all inmates 'dine in their respective wards'.
