Administrative / biographical background:

The superannuation function covering all government departments was originally covered by the (Treasury) Pay Group, Superannuation Division to 1983. Pay Group did not have a Sector to govern its operations initially and reported directly to the HM Treasury Management Board to 1983. Before 1981, the function had belonged to the Civil Service Department prior to its abolition in late 1981.

From 1984, Pay and Allowances Command took over the Pay Group and the Superannuation Division there under to 1985 when the Financial Management; Public Services (Sector), Running Costs and Superannuation (Group), Superannuation Division took over. This continued to 1987 when Running Costs and Superannuation (Group) became simply Running Costs (Group) which continued management oversight of the Superannuation Division.
