Title: Treasury Solicitor: Registered Files, Air Ministry (AM Series)
Description:

Selected registered files relating to work by the Treasury Solicitor for the Air Ministry and (in a few cases) the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

They cover the legal aspects of a variety of military and civil aviation topics, including air accidents and disasters; compensation claims; contracts and agreements for aircraft manufacture; airfields, airports and aerodromes; civilian airlines, including agreements with Imperial Airways and British Airways Ltd; agreements for provision of services by the Empire Air Mail Scheme; establishment of the British Overseas Airways Corporation; compulsory purchase of property; courts martial; legislation and statutory instruments; subsidies and Government support for private flying and aviation clubs; and inventions and patent claims including cases before the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors.

Although papers continue to be added to existing files until the 1980s, registration in this series ceased in 1955.

Date: 1912-1982
Arrangement:

The files were registered in a simple consecutively numbered sequence. The series is arranged by these file numbers, but within blocks of transfers.

The original file numbers were preceded by a prefix, initially 'AM' and later 'AM1'. The change in prefixes occurred circa 1943 and was purely cosmetic, since files continued to be numbered in a single series.
