Title: | HM Procurator General: Report Books, Series I |
Description: |
Entry books of HM Procurator General of papers relating to cases referred to him by the Treasury for report. Most of the cases concern claims from shipping agents, owners of private ships, etc, regarding the distribution of prize money or claims to the estates of deceased persons when the property has become bona vacantia owing to the deceased having died intestate or without a lawful heir. The volumes record, besides the reports (known as 'Government Reports'), the associated correspondence, memorials, petitions and similar documents. The records in Series I are those of Charles Bishop, HM Procurator General from 1804 to 1815, apart from the first volume (TS 8/1A), which is that of Bishop's immediate predecessor, James Heseltine. |
Date: | 1804-1815 |
Arrangement: |
The volumes are arranged in roughly chronological order, but because there is much overlapping of dates between one volume and another the Bishop volumes have been assigned common dates corresponding to his period of office. It is apparent that several entry books were maintained at the same time, no attempt being made to distinguish them alphabetically by memorialist or according to the type of case concerned. It is possible that they were kept by different clerks. In some instances it would seem that as the case papers were received from the Treasury they were entered in the first available volume. |
