Description:

Folios 502-503. Report of a visit made by the Commissioners in Lunacy to the Newcastle under Lyme Poor Law Union on 4 November 1861 by Mr Wilkes. The form includes details of diet, accommodation and treatment, and of particular cases. Those cases mentioned are: 2 males and 1 female in the workhouse classed as of unsound mind. There were 7 patients who were so classed in 1857, but are not now so affected as to need to include them in this class of patient. One patient went to the asylum and returned cured. The others are usefully employed, but it is unlikely they could care for themselves outside the workhouse.

Joseph Salt came to the workhouse in recent weeks, very week from refusing food and very much depressed, the Commissioner thinks him a proper case for treatment at the asylum.

Annotated: request the observations of the guardians with reference to Joseph Salt.
