Files of the Defence Policy and Materiel (DM) Division of the Treasury. They relate to the Treasury's involvement with the armed forces and their budgets. Subjects covered in the files include: naval aviation, atomic energy and weapons research, defence contracts, research, works and supplies, patents, arms exports, disarmament, air research and development, Royal Ordnance Factories, overseas military assistance, international defence questions, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, British bases overseas, (including Cyprus, and Korea), British Army of the Rhine, Western European Union, and miscellaneous Inter-Service questions.

Also includes files of the S series (T 161) which were re-registered in the DM series in 1948.

The Defence Policy and Materiel (DM) Division was set up in 1938. In 1957 the Trade and Industry Division (TI) took over responsibility for most questions relating to civil aviation, except those relating to the development or production, at government expense, of aircraft or aero engines, which remained with the DM Division.
