Administrative / biographical background:

The Arts, Science and Lands (AS) Division was set up in 1958 to take over: the work on museums, galleries and National Land Fund previously dealt with by the Social Services (SS) Division; the scientific work previously dealt with by the Trade and Industry (TI) Division; the establishments work on these subjects dealt with by Establishments Departmental (ED) Division; and the work on ancient monuments and historical buildings dealt with by the Government and Allied Services (GS) Division.

AS Division dealt with the following subjects from its inception until 1962:

Supply and Establishment questions on:

  • museums, galleries and record offices;
  • Arts Council;
  • Historical Manuscripts Commission;
  • Royal Fine Art Commission;
  • Export Works of Art Committee;
  • Grant Aided Bodies (Arts);
  • National Land Fund (pre-eminent Works of Art);
  • historic buildings and ancient monuments;
  • National Buildings Record; and
  • Ancient Monuments Commissions.

Supply questions on:

  • Department of Scientific and Industrial Research;
  • Royal Society;
  • Royal Society of Edinburgh;
  • National Land Fund (houses and land);
  • University of Wales Press Board; and
  • Grant Aided Bodies (Arts).

In 1959, the 'lands' work previously the responsibility of GS Division was transferred to AS Division. Following Treasury reorganisation in 1962 the supply functions were re-transferred back to the Social Services (SS) Division of the Treasury, and the establishments work to the various establishments divisions.
