British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Protector (commander John Foster Williams).

History: an American ship of war (frigate, 600 tons, 26 guns, 170 men), bound on a cruise and returning to Boston, laden with prize goods [sugar, gunpowder, nankeens, tea, Russia Drab [cloth], sweet oil, chintz, gauze, French duck; these having been taken from the captured British ship Commerce bound from Antigua to St Lucia, and from an American ship in distress, the Spanish Fame]; taken on 5 May 1781 about 20 leagues south of Montauk Point, British New York by HMS Roebuck (Andrew Snape Douglas commanding) and HMS Medea (Henry Duncan commanding), and brought into New York.
