The Research Unit was established in 1960, initially as part of the Statistics and Research Department, later becoming part of the Research Department in 1972, then moving to the Radio Regulatory and Statistical Departments, Scientific Adviser's Branch and Research Unit in 1974. Its role was to conduct social sciences researches in support of the policy aims of the Home Office, particularly around policing, criminal justice, immigration, race relations and drug and alcohol issues. |
