Administrative / biographical background:

The Spending Directorate was created in 1995 and was the main successor to the previous Public Services business unit which it replaced. It comprised the following departments / business units: Aid, Diplomacy and Intelligence; Defence; Agriculture; Social Security; Health; Local Government; Employment and Training; Home and Legal; and Central Operational Research and Economics.

By 1998, the Spending Directorate was disbanded and replaced by the Public Services Directorate.
