Custodial history: Records stored at HM Treasury at 1 Horse Guards Road to April 2012. Thereafter the records were stored at a third party contractor prior to transfer to The National Archives.
Administrative / biographical background:

The Government Accountancy Service and Management Unit was created in 1992 to support the Head of Government Accountancy Service. It included the following business units: Internal Audit Development Division; Public Services; Social Services and Territorial Group; Local Government Group; Treasury Officer of Accounts; and the Purchasing Group.

The Unit continued after 1992 but only covered the function for Internal Audit Development Division; to encourage government departments to use internal audit standards. The Deputy Chief Accountancy Adviser and Director of Government Accountancy Services Management Unit took over the remaining functions from 1993. The Government Accountancy Service and Management Unit was disbanded in 1994.
