Reference: FO 371/71544/6
Description:
Registry Number: N 2069/74/55. Foreign Office Minutes and related correspondence about Polish assets in the UK, dated February 1948. States that 'the greater part of the assets in question are military ones, that is to say assets of the former Polish Armed Forces under British Command now held by the Polish Resettlement Corps or disposed of by them'. Further refers to five places where Polish art treasures are said to be stored. 'The first three places are military establishments and General Thomas is making enquiries accordingly. The last two places are civilian establishments and it is therefore for us to make the enquiries'. States that 'in doing this it is necessary to proceed with great care and discretion: Otherwise, if there are any art treasures, our enquiries are only likely to cause them to disappear'. Refers to Mr Frank Savery who knows all the leading Polish citizens resident in London and who is a considerable authority on the Polish art collections. The Minutes state that Mr Frank Savery 'knows nothing of any collections being' in the UK. Further includes a Pamphlet on the 'Agreement between the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Polish Provisional Government of National Unity for the Settlement of Outstanding Financial Questions'. Foreign Office Note by Hector McNeil stating that 'The Polish Ambassador mentioned a list of where works of art and objects of art were in this country.' The list is not enclosed.
