A manuscript statement of the practical means planned by the first Registrar General and adopted for taking the 1841 Census was prepared entitled "History of the Census of 1841". The volume sets out the preparatory steps, instructions and layout of the forms. Separate collections have been made for other census of England and Wales from 1861 to 1991. Those for the 1921 and 1931 censuses include forms and instructions used in machine and tabulation processes.
