Description:

A selected sample of General Register Office correspondence with the Treasury, Ministry of Health and other Government Departments, the Industrial Court, Civil Service Clerical Association, local Registrars of Births, Deaths and Marriages and individuals. The material relates to establishment and personnel matters, arbitration and awards for search officers, cost of services rendered to other government departments, GRO estimates and certain matters concerning the indexes of birth, death and marriage registers, including the evacuation of registers and indexes from London, 1939 to 1942. Other files concern injuries received by enumerators during the 1931 census period, also a proposal to remove the General Register Office from Somerset House.

The series also includes account books, 1836 to 1854, and certain papers, 1920 to 1946, kept by R J R Farrow, Deputy Registrar General (1942-1946), also staff organisation charts mainly from 1947.
