Description:

Enumerators' schedules of returns made by heads of households for the 1861 census, which include the names, age, sex, occupation and parish and county of birth of individual members of the population of England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Included in this series are returns from ships of the Royal Navy and merchant shipping at sea and in ports abroad, and from British ships in home ports. The series also includes descriptions of the proposed enumeration districts for London.

Arrangement:

The returns are topographically arranged in numerical order of registration district. The index to places gives the appropriate registration district number of each place. The whereabouts of institutions is indicated by a numerical code explained below:

  • (1) Barracks, military quarters and hospitals;
  • (2) HM ships at home;
  • (3) Workhouses and pauper schools;
  • (4) Hospitals for the sick, convalescents and incurables;
  • (5) Lunatic asylums both public and private;
  • (6) Prisons;
  • (7) Certified reformatories and industrial schools;
  • (8) Merchant vessels;
  • (9) Schools.
