Administrative / biographical background:

The London, Newbury and Bath Direct Railway Company would have constructed a railway from a junction with the Great Western Railway Company's line immediately east of Bath Station, following the route of the Kennet & Avon Canal until Newbury where it would have joined the Berks and Hants Railway. The proposed railway would not have deviated from the route of the canal by any more than one hundred yards and in some places the plan was to divert the canal to accommodate the railway. The railway would have therefore run through or near Bathampton, Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Devizes, Pewsey and Great Bedwyn. A bill to incorporate the company and to authorise the construction of the railway was deposited in Parliament in 1846 but it did not receive Royal assent.
