Details of RAIL 1038
Reference: RAIL 1038
Title: Board of Trade Railway Department and Ministry of Transport Proceedings under Railway and Canal Traffic Acts 1854-1894.
Description:

This series consists almost entirely of papers printed either for Parliament or for one of the departments of state. In only a very few instances are any company's 'domestic' papers included with them.

Date: 1874-1955
Arrangement:

The material formerly in BTHR series MT 1 and MT(Y) 1 included a great deal analogous to, and in some cases identical to that in, firstly the former LCA series, and secondly the various other former MT series. This has been removed during reclassification and either allocated to other series or been disposed of as duplicate.

Before reclassification these papers were divided into ten London and nine York series. On examination it was found that very large numbers of duplicate items had been included, and that some of the items also duplicated material in the former LCA, RC and SC series. It was also found that items on the same or closely related subjects had been put in different MT series, and sometimes copies of the same items had been treated differently in the London and York collections.

A radical reclassification of the material was therefore undertaken.
