DENIS first came to the Security Service's notice in early 1941 when he was arrested in Spain, having been recognized as a member of the International Brigade in 1937 and the leader of the Belgian Communist Party. Later the same year he was reported to be working for the Comintern as liaison officer between the OGPU and the Gestapo
