Administrative / biographical background:

The (Old) Channel Tunnel Company was incorporated in 1872. In 1874 the South Eastern Railway obtained powers to undertake experimental workings and in December 1881 floated the Submarine Continental Railway Company

In 1886 the Submarine Continental Railway purchased the Channel Tunnel Company, which was wound up. In March 1887 the Submarine Continental Railway adopted the title of (New) Channel Tunnel Company, which was extant as of 1958.
