Incorporated as Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway Company under Act 14 & 15 Vic, cap.71, dated 3rd July 1851. By act of 4th August 1853, name of company was changed to Warrington and Stockport Railway. Line was leased for 999 years to London and North Western and St. Helens Canal and railway companies by act of 13th August 1859, with option (if St. Helens Company agreed) for London and North Western Company to purchase. This option was exercised in December 1860 (See LNW 3/74). London and North Western Railway Company was vested in London Midland and Scottish Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 under North Western, Midland and West Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme dated 30th December 1922.
