Administrative / biographical background: |
Incorporated under act of 2nd July 1847. Under section 70, the company was empowered to alter the levels, line etc. of "a certain existing Private Railway or Tramway known as the Swansea Vale Railway" and also "to purchase and take so much of the Swansea Vale Railway and lands as may be necessary". The gauge was to be 7 feet so as to allow the railway to be worked continuously with the South Wales Railway. Section 54 gave power to lease the railway to the South Wales Railway Company and the Great Western Railway Company or either of them, and section 55 conferred powers to sell the undertaking to these companies or either of them. The powers of this Act were allowed to lapse. Bradshaw's Manual for 1854 refers to the Swansea Valley Railway Company as a purely nominal company, but the Swansea Vale Railway Company (q.v.) was formed in January 1850 to acquire the Swansea Valley Railway Company. The last recorded meeting of the Swansea Valley Railway Company is that of 21st January 1853. |
