Description:

Folios 183-184: John Gore, HMS Medusa, Plymouth. He has sailed from Saugor Roads at the mouth of the Ganges to report the death of Marquis Cornwallis. He encloses letters from various people encountered on his route to and from India, including Admiral Sir Edward Pellew, Major General [Wemyss?] and George Abercrombie Robinson.

Folios 185-186: enclosure with folios 183-184. Letter dated 24 December 1805 from John Gore to Colonel Patton, Governor of St Helena. He is unable to comply with the request to bring French prisoners to England as he has too many people and items on his ship.

Folio 187: enclosure with folios 183-184. Letter dated 24 December 1805 from John Gore stating he is unable to take the convoy including the Baring and Airly Castle, according to the orders of Sir George Barlow, Governor General of India.

Folio 188: enclosure with folios 183-184. Letter dated 20 November 1805 from Ross Donnelly to Robert Patton, Governor of St Helena, noting the 47 captured aliens on board his ship, who should be considered as Pirates rather than Privateers, who should be strictly kept and exchanged as they are well acquainted with the African coast and have committed depredations on English trade there.

Folio 189: enclosure with folios 183-184: Letter dated 20 November 1805 from Ross Donnelly, HMS Narcissus, St Helena. Gives information about the capture of the French vessel, Le Prudent and the discovery on board the Englishman going by the name Thomas Lindsey, who justified his serving on board the French ship by claiming to be American. Confirmation of his service can be obtained from the crew of the Horatio, now proceeding by the West Indies to Liverpool.

Folio 190: enclosure with folios 183-184: Letter dated 23 December 1805 from Robert Patton to John Gore asking on behalf of the East India Company whether the ships Baring and and Airly Castle might be taken under his protection.

Folio 191: enclosure with folios 183-184: Copy of letter dated 24 December 1805 from Robert Patton to John Gore of HMS Medusa, about French prisoners and a criminal.

Folio 192: enclosure with folios 183-184: Letter dated 20 October 1805 from G. Robinson in Calcutta requesting that following the death of Marquis Cornwallis, his staff might be permitted to return to England on HMS Medusa.

Folio 193: enclosure with folios 183-184: Letter dated 23 October 1805 from the former Commander of the Army in Ceylon, requesting passage on Sir John Gore's ship HMS Medusa from Calcutta for himself and two officers.

Folio 194: enclosure with folios 183-184: copy of letter dated 31 October 1805 from Thomas Brown requesting on behalf of Sir George Barlow that Sir John Gore, Captain of HMS Medusa, take charge of dispatches to the Court of Directors and to the Secret Committee.

Folio 195: enclosure with folios 183-184: Letter dated 23 October 1805 from Sir George Barlow on the river near Marzapore to sir Hohn Gore, requesting immediate convoy to England of dispatches, following the death of Marquis Cornwallis.

Folio 196: enclosure with folios 183-184: Copy of letter dated 14 September 1805 from Sir George Barlow to sir John Gore, marked 'Private and Confidential'. Giving warning of the poor state of health of Lord Cornwallis.

Folios 197-198: enclosure with folios 183-184. Copy of letter from John Gore on HMS Medusa at Saugor Roads to Marquis Cornwallis. He has learnt from Captain Elphinstone, on the arrival of HMS Greyhound, that Commander in Chief and Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Trowbridge have sailed to Prince of Wales Island, and therefore John Gore will have to make his own decision as to the disposal of HMS Medusa. He is concerned at the effect of the unhealthy climate on the crew.

Folio 199: enclosure with folios 183-184. Copy of letter from Wellesly in Calcutta regretting he was not informed about HMS Medusa coming to Bengal, but he had already accepted an offer of a journey home with Captain Cockburn on HMS Howe.

Folio 200: enclosure with folios 183-184. Copy of letter to Marquis [Richard] Wellesley enclosing the order for the Medusa to transport Marquis Cornwallis to Bengal. Offers the same acommodation that Lord Cornwallis has occupied.

Folio 201: enclosure with folios 183-184. Copy of instruction to Sir John Gore from Sir Edward Pellew, Commander in Chief of his Majesty's ships, to have a ship in readiness to bring dispatches to England from the East Indies.

Folio 202: enclosure with folios 183-184. List of ships moored at St Helena on 24 December 1805. Includes owners, captains, from whence sailed and where bound.
