Incorporated by Act of 20 May 1825 which authorised 'Railway or Tramway'. Locomotive engines were first employed on line between 1840 and 1845.

The Company was re-incorporated under Rumney Railway Act of 1 August 1861 and transferred to and vested in Brecon & Merthyr Tydfil Junction Railway Company under Rumney & Brecon and Merthyr Railways Act of 28 July 1863.

Brecon & Merthyr Tydfil Junction Railway Company was absorbed into Great Western Railway Company as from 1 July 1922 under Great Western Railway (Western Group) Preliminary Absorption Scheme (No 2) of 24 July 1922.
