Incorporated by act of 16th July 1846. This company was originally promoted as Cambridge & Oxford Railway but never came to fruition as such being limited by House of Lords to section from Royston to Hitchin.

Line from Royston to Hitchin was leased to Great Northern Railway Company on 1st August 1850 and that of Shepreth Extension on 24th January 1853, but under act of 23rd June 1864 Great Northern, and Great Eastern railway companies entered into arrangements regarding Royston & Hitchin line which was leased to Great Eastern Railway Company for 14 years reverting, however, to Great Northern Railway Company from 1st April 1866.

Royston & Hitchin Railway Company was vested in Great Northern Railway Company from 1st July 1897 under act of 3rd June 1897. Great Northern Railway Company became part of London & North Eastern Railway Company from 1st January 1923 under North Eastern, Eastern & East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.
