Incorporated by act of 23rd May 1842 (5 & 6 Vic, cap.27). This company was formed in 1831 as Stanhope and Tyne Railroad and to avoid capital outlay arranged to pay wayleaves to various landowners over whose land line ran. In 1841, company was reconstructed and later incorporated as mentioned above. Pontop and South Shields Railway Company was acquired by Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway Company by act of 3rd August 1846, by which time latter company had changed its name to York and Newcastle Railway (later changed to York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway Company).
