Folio(s) 176A-176B. Letter from John Jefferys, Town Clerk of Bath [Somerset], stating that the city magistrates have become aware of 'Six Journeymen Shoemakers and a Journeyman Smith, who are much addicted to inflame and promote sedition', including the distribution of handbills in alehouses and verbal declarations about the King, Pitt [William Pitt], and Dundas [Henry Dundas] relating to money lost in the Bank of Venice. Two of the men, Thomas Robins and William Bennett, have been arrested on the mayor's orders and await trial at the next city sessions. Jefferys asks, on the magistrates' behalf, for the Home Secretary's instructions. Copies of two handbills are enclosed [not included], one of which bears the image of a pike which the men sought to have made. |
