Administrative / biographical background:

The LRP file series was opened in 2003 to capture papers on the development of a livestock register. This was a project within the Livestock Identification and Tracing Programme. Over the next few years, DEFRA continued to work with Government and Industry partners to develop a livestock register. The intention was that the register would be Government’s primary source of livestock identification and tracing information, used for animal disease control purposes. In 2006 a review was carried out on how the register should be delivered. DEFRA wanted to make sure that they were on track for delivering the best value for money, outcome that met both Government and industry’s needs. From April 2007, development work was transferred from core DEFRA to Animal Health. The name of the project changed upon transfer and is now called the Livestock Partnership.
