Administrative / biographical background:

Under act of 18th June 1842 (5 & 6 Vic, cap.80) the Newcastle & Darlington Junction Railway Company was incorporated and under act of 27th July 1846 (9 & 10 Vic, cap.242) the name of the company was changed to York & Newcastle Railway Company.

By virtue of the Act of 31st July 1845 (8 & 9 Vic, cap.163) the Newcastle & Berwick Railway Company was incorporated.

Under act of 9th August 1847 (10 & 11 Vic, cap.133) the Newcastle & Berwick Railway Company was dissolved and the undertaking and that of the York & Newcastle Railway Company were amalgamated into one company, the York & Newcastle Railway Company, and thereupon the name of the York & Newcastle Railway Company was changed to the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway Company.

Under the North-eastern Railway Company's Act of 31st July 1854 (17 & 18 Vic, cap.211) the companies known as the York & North Midland Railway Company, the the Leeds Northern Railway Company were dissolved and vested in the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway Company thenceforth called the North-eastern Railway Company, later known as the North Eastern Railway Company.

The North Eastern Railway Company, the Hull & Barnsley Railway Company, and the Hull Joint Dock Committee, were dissolved and united into one company by the name of the North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st April 1922 by virtue of the North Eastern and Hull & Barnsley railway companies Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 1st April 1922. This North Eastern Railway Company became part of the London & North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 under the North Eastern, and East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.
