Prisoner name: Richard Holt.

Prisoner occupation: Dyer and calico printer.

Court and date of trial: Lancashire Quarter Sessions at Salford 9 March 1835.

Crime: Obtaining goods by false pretences - copper rollers, value £35, on 25 August [1834], property of Joseph Ewart, commission agent.

Initial sentence: 12 months imprisonment in Lancaster Castle.

Annotated: The Chairman recommends merciful consideration, if he is pardoned now two months will be remitted. Remission prepared 30 January 1836.

Petitioner(s): Ellen Holt (the prisoner's wife) undersigned by 16 people of Manchester (occupations and names given).

Grounds for clemency: The prisoner's wife has nine small children, the youngest only six weeks old; prisoner has served the public in the Rifle Corps and local volunteers and as a special constable; previous good character; the prisoner had intended to pay for the copper rollers a month after delivery, but his landlord confiscated his effects for rent, thus rendering him without any money.
