This series consists of records of the London and Blackwall Railway Company (formerly Commercial).

This series also contains some correspondence and papers of the East and West India Dock Company, 1825 to 1849, presented privately in 1979. These concern the development of the London and Blackwall railway and include a few letters and reports of Sir John Rennie and George and Robert Stephenson.

Incorporated under act of 28th July 1836 as the Commercial Railway Company and the name changed to London & Blackwall Railway Company under act of 17th August 1839.

Under act of June 1865, 28 Vic cap.100, the undertaking was leased to the Great Eastern Railway Company for 999 years as from 1st January 1866.

The London & Blackwall Railway was transferred to and vested in the London & North Eastern Railway Company from 1st January 1923 under the London & North Eastern Railway Absorption (No. 1) Scheme 1923 dated 29th June 1923.
