Incorporated as Leeds and Thirsk Railway Company under act of 21st July 1845 (8 & 9 Vic, cap.163). Name of company was changed to Leeds Northern Railway Company as from 8th August 1851 under Act 14 & 15 Vic, cap.47.

Under North-eastern Railway Company Act of 31st July 1854 (17 & 18 Vic, cap.211), Leeds Northern Railway, and York and North Midland railway companies were dissolved and vested in York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway Company thenceforth called North-eastern Railway Company, later known as North Eastern Railway Company.

North Eastern Railway Company, Hull and Barnsley Railway Company, and Hull Joint Dock Committee were dissolved and united into one company by name of North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st April 1922 by virtue of North Eastern, and Hull and Barnsley railway companies Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 1st April 1922. This North Eastern Railway Company became part of London and North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 under North Eastern, Eastern, and East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.
