Description:

This series contains minutes of meetings of the proprietors and directors of the Manchester and Leeds Railway and of its successor, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, and of various boards and committees, including the Finance, Traffic, Executive and Land and Construction Committees. Also included are stocks and share registers, deeds, agreements, contracts, specifications, estimates, plans, drawings, photograph albums and lithographs, including those of the Manchester and Leeds Railway drawn by A F Tait and used in Butterworth's history of the line, and books of agreement with other railway companies. There are locomotive and rolling stock records, half-yearly statements, correspondence, drawings and diagrams from the Horwich locomotive works, and registers of privately owned wagons. The series also contains reports on bills deposited in Parliament, staff records, including pay lists, and company publications, as well as the civil engineer's costs and works ledgers and records of the company's marine activities, including steamship specifications and other historical details.

Administrative / biographical background:

An amalgamation of various companies by Act 6 & 7 William 4, 1836, into Manchester & Leeds Railway Company (see preamble to Manchester & Leeds Railway Act No 3 of 9 July 1847), which name was changed by act of 9 July 1847 to Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company.

Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company was amalgamated with London & North Western Railway Company from 1 January 1922 under Amalgamation scheme dated 20 December 1921.

London & North Western Railway Company became vested in London Midland and Scottish Railway Company from 1 January 1923 under North Western Midland and West Scottish Amalgamation Scheme dated 30 December 1922.
