The snapshot/s in this series commence in 2012, but concern the 'Inquiry into Post-14 Mathematics Education', which was commissioned by the UK Government in 2002.

On 23 July 2002, the Government announced that there would be an Inquiry into Post-14 mathematics education. On 31 October 2002, Professor Adrian Smith FRS, Principal of Queen Mary, University of London, was appointed chair of the Inquiry by the Minister of State for Lifelong Learning and Higher Education, Margaret Hodge, and the Minister of State for School Standards, David Miliband.

The purpose of the Inquiry was: 'To make recommendations on changes to the curriculum, qualifications and pedagogy for those aged 14 and over in schools, colleges and higher education institutions to enable those students to acquire the mathematical knowledge and skills necessary to meet the requirements of employers and of further and higher education'.

In February 2004 the report of the Inquiry, 'Making Mathematics Count', was presented to the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Charles Clarke.
