Originally called the Grand Eastern Counties Railway, the Eastern Counties Railway Company was incorporated by Act 4th July, 1836.

By Amalgamation Act of 7th August 1862, Eastern Counties, Norfolk, Eastern Union, East Anglian, East Suffolk, and other subsidiary undertakings in connection therewith, were amalgamated to form Great Eastern Railway Company. Details of amalgamation are printed on page 3 of appendix to Bradshaw's manual for 1863.

Great Eastern Railway Company became one of constituent companies of London and North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st January 1923.
