The Cleator and Workington Junction Railway Company was incorporated under an act of 27th June 1876.

Under the Cleator and Workington Junction Railway Act of 28th June 1877, the Furness Railway Company was empowered to enter into an agreement with the Cleator and Workington Junction Railway Company with regard to work and management, and a joint committee was to be appointed for this purpose.

By London Midland and Scottish Railway Preliminary Absorption Scheme 1923 dated 3rd April 1923, Cleator and Workington Junction Railway Company was vested in London Midland and Scottish Railway Company as from 1st January 1923.
